"...some quality goalkeeping from the
Ipswich custodian kept it tight right to the final whistle."
PUSFC opened up their 2011-12 IFA League season with a 1-0
win over local rivals Ipswich. This was the first ever IFA League meeting
between the two sides, and credit to both teams for making it an entertaining
one (though not as entertaining as the afternoon fixture!). We had several
chances to make the scoreline a little more comfortable, but some quality
goalkeeping from the Ipswich custodian kept it tight right to the final
whistle. Craig Buckley was the PUSFC scorer.
"...a screamer from Craig
Matthews."
Two more matches to update on, and both were wins! We
travelled down to Leyton Orient on 22nd April and came away with a narrow 3-2
victory courtesy of strikes from Craig Buckley (2) and John Webb. We then
played host to Dagenham & Redbridge on the last day of the regular season
(7th May), and played out a decent 5-1 win. The goals in that one came from
Craig Buckley (2), Andy Mills, Nick Jackson, and a screamer from Craig
Matthews.
"One win and one loss to
report..."
One win and one loss to report in this mini-update. First
the good news - a 5-2 win against Carlisle with Nick Jackson (2), Craig Buckley
(2), and Leigh Porter grabbing the PUSFC goals. Now the bad, as we lost our
100% record for the season going down 3-1 against Cambridge (who were much
changed from the team that we defeated 6-1 on the opening day). Nick Jackson
grabbed the only PUSFC goal from the penalty spot after Gilbert Mensah had been
brought down in the penalty area (which was perhaps for the best, as his shot
would probably have gone over the bar from six yards anyway). Next stop is
Leyton Orient, and we'll be looking to get back to winning ways if
possible....
"...Tranmere can perhaps feel a little
hard done by..."
It was all a bit wet, but we kept up our 100% IFA record
this season with a hard-fought 3-2 win over Tranmere. To be fair Tranmere can
perhaps feel a little hard done by to come away with nothing, but we just
managed to take advantage of one more chance on the day and snatch the points.
The goals were scored by Nick Jackson and Craig Buckley (2). Next up is
Carlisle and it'll hopefully be a slightly warmer, drier day for that one!
"...hopefully we're going to get going
again now..."
I know, I know - we've not played for ages. In all honesty
the fixture computer has been horrible to us this season, and I've taken my eye
off the ball a little. Hopefully we're going to get going again now though, and
I'm happy to announce a few forthcoming IFA fixtures: February 19 - H -
Tranmere March 12 - H - Carlisle March 19 - A - Cambridge April 23 - A
- Leyton Orient May 7 - H - Dagenham & Redbridge
Fingers crossed
there will be even more to confirm soon, since WorldNET is fast
approaching...

"...pretty even until the final 15
minutes..."
Thanks to Colin and his lads for coming over to us and
playing their part in a very good game of football. Both teams looked to get
the ball down and play, which was not made at all easy by the bumpy pitch. The
game was pretty even until the final 15 minutes when we stole a couple of goals
and maintained our 100% league record. Looking forward to the return fixture
later in the season.

"...finally been beaten by a goal that
never should have been allowed."
PUSFC headed over to compete in the Stanley Heames Cup which
was being held in Coventry to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. With a squad
of just eleven players on the day we were perhaps expecting the worst, but
having started with a 1-1 draw against Nott County we then went from
strength-to-strength beating Bury 1-0 and Burnley 5-1 in the group stages.
Burton were next up in the semi-final and we put on another great performance
to emerge with a 3-0 victory, setting up a final against a very useful looking
Leyton Orient side. The miracle wasn't quite to be though as we lost 1-0 to a
hotly disputed first-half goal. The ball was clearly out of play in the
build-up, but the Orient player knocked it back in and then ran on to score. We
were gutted - well over two hours of football and we'd finally been beaten by a
goal that never should have been allowed. To be fair to Orient they were
clearly the better side and Brendo had a blinder keeping it to one, but without
that goal we'd have forced them to pens and who knows what would have happened
then.
"...Tom Killingsworth bagged himself a
hat-trick..."
Huge thanks to Richard for bringing his lads over to us for
the first game of the season. As always this was a great game, played out in
the perfect IFA spirit. Tom Killingsworth bagged himself a hat-trick with Leigh
Porter, Stephen White, and Jon Connor picking up the other Posh goals. We look
foward to returning the fixture later on in the campaign, and with them all the
best for the rest of the season!
"...in the top 16 in the
world..."
PUSFC returned to Leeds to compete in WorldNET for the
fourth time, and once again enjoyed a fantastic weekend of football. We started
slowly with a 0-1 defeat to Dumbarton, but soon recovered with a 4-0 win over
Kidderminster, and a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Dunfermline. Inbetween, we
managed a 2-1 friendly win over AFC Wimbledon, and a 0-4 friendly defeat to
Hull. Safely through to the cup knockout stages, we then progressed beating
Exeter 1-0, then Crewe Alexandra 1-0, before finally slipping out 0-1 to
Gillingham in the quarter finals. That kind of officially puts us in the top 16
in the world, so not a bad weekend all in and we'll be back for WorldNET
2011!
"...successfully defended our
title..."
One big round-up for a load of games that got lost in the
sea of time at the back end of the season. There are quite a few actually, so
I'm just going to list 'em: We lost 1-2 to Cambridge (doh), we drew 3-3 (again)
with Histon, we beat Leicester 6-1, and we lost 1-4 to West Ham. We also
successfully defended our title at the Bill Harvey Memorial Tournament played
on London Road, and gained revenge on the Free Kicks boys with a 13-1 win in
our annual charity clash.
"...a draw perhaps the right result at
the end..."
Cheers to Matt and his lads for the game on Saturday
morning - a pretty close match with a draw perhaps the right result at the end
of the day (though it could easily have been 2-2 with both sides missing easy
chances within a minute of each other). We had the better of the first half and
took the lead via a deflected Ash Garford effort, they had the better of the
second. We had 11 men, they had well over 20 and changed virtually the entire
team during the break - massive kudos to them for having enough interested lads
to be able to do that! Given the afternoon result, this could even be a fixture
we can repeat next season as well. I'd like that - a good bunch of lads.
"...we soon found our rhythm..."
PUSFC finally returned to action after an enforced winter
break with a friendly against local side Ryhall Utd. Things didn't start well
and we were 0-1 down early on, but we soon found our rhythm and thanks to Ash
Garford (2), Nick 'Mr Gay UK'
Jackson (2), Josh Smith, and Rob Birley we eventually ran out 6-4 winners.
Back in league action next week against Watford. |
